Action against Amnesty only if sedition charge is proved

Defending the police’s decision to file a sedition case against Amnesty International India, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said here on Tuesday that the case was filed on the basis of a complaint by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the police would proceed “only if evidence is found to substantiate the claims made.”
“If no evidence is found to substantiate the sedition charge, the investigating officer has the freedom to change the sections,” he said.
When it was pointed out that the Congress had taken a strong stand against the filing of sedition charges in the Jawaharlal Nehru University case against Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the JNU Students Union, he said, “This is a different case and the issue is different. CCTV footage will be acquired and witnesses questioned before proceeding further.”
The police, when contacted, refused to comment on any action in the case.
Meanwhile, around 20 ABVP members were detained after they staged a protest outside the Raj Bhavan against Amnesty.
The rights group, which organised an event to highlight the plight of families of victims of human rights violations in J&K on Saturday, termed the ABVP allegations “baseless.” It said none of its employees “raised any slogans or entered into a scuffle as alleged by the ABVP.”
