Amar Jyoti

It is no mean achievement that a weekly with modest resources has completed over half a century of its existence and is now launching its news portal. The weekly made its appearance on 15th August, 1948 under the ownership and editorship of Mr. Narain Chaturvedi. Chaturvedi although had no formal education yet he was a well-read person gifted with extra-ordinary writing skills. Later in the fifties and sixties he gained considerable eminence in public life and held many important positions including Member of the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha, Chairman of Jaipur Zila Parishad and Chairperson of Several Banks.

It was because of the effective contacts of Narain Chaturvedi with man of letters and social scientists that Amar Jyoti even in its infancy was stuffed with rich reading material. Basically, it was a political weekly but it also carried creative writings such as poems, short stories, satires etc. 

It is important to point out that Amar Jyoti started at a critical juncture when India had won freedom only a year ago. It was a time of great upheavals as a result of partition of the country. As far as Rajasthan was concerned it’s people were still being ruled by the respective rulers of the 22 riyasats. While farmers and other downtrodden people were still being exploited and atrocities were being inflicted on the common people in various forms. However, there were a few enlightened rulers also who paid their attention towards education, health and administrative reforms. Amar Jyoti weekly strived hard to reflect this scenario in its columns. It promoted many budding poets and short story writers who later became considerably popular in the literary world. Amar Jyoti’s editorial and comments were read with great gusto by its rural readers. 

Research scholars in their investigative treatises have unanimously observed that Amar Jyoti weekly occupied a front position in the galaxy of periodical journalism in Rajasthan. There is no denying the fact that this weekly which had an humble start progressed with galloping speed and now, under editorship of Ashok Chaturvedi, it will have its news portal in tune with the changing times.
